The Shore Surf Club AGM was held today ,8th of Jan 2012 ,Shore Pub.

Will Pleasance ,the president, called the meeting at 11:30 am.

First to speak was Graham Taplin with a round up of the club activities of the past year.

The first event was the Welcome party at the "Drift In" cafe, followed by the beach clean up,

the groms surf comp, camping week end in Devon, Paddle race from east to west , MR contest

ending with the South Coast in IOW and the British Longboard inter club at Saunton.

Comments where:

Welcome party was a success with the new members joining the club.

Mike Ruinet contest was very good too with the junior members taking part.

Camping week end in Devon was very enjoyable with a good bunch of juniors and kids with their families.

Paddle race was good but slightly disappointing with the amount of money raised for charity.

Most people just paid for the entry fee but not charity. Lets hope we can improve this!

IOW,South Coast Contest was challenging to say the least, thanks to Nick,Shane and Ed who did a huge paddle out in very harsh conditions..

Well done to the longboard division for coming 2nd(Shag),3rd(Symms),4th(Nicolai).

The inter club was fun , we managed an 8th place, room for improvements there.

The scoring system was different..so we have to be better prepare for this year.

Graham is stepping down as events director, but wish to help the club when need it,

specially when the time comes to run the South Coast Champ at home!

Our Longboarder members are welcome to participate with the hot-doggers at Saunton.

We thanked Graham for all the good work during these years.

Adriano ,club secretary, told us that the junior membership has risen steadily

in the last 3 years.

This past year 2011, junior members amounted to a total of 40%.

Adriano said:

"The club has achieved what we set up to do a year ago, to attract more surf groms.

Nick and he's Wittering Surf Shop have really helped us to get more juniors into the club and we thanks him for this."

Adriano is stepping down from secretary to concentrate on running club events.

Lucy has given out a questionnaire for all juniors to fill in regarding their experience of the past year.

Then Jude Conlon spoke as the representative of the juniors saying that the best event was the Devon weekend.

Most of the junior’s thoughts that this year it would be better to find a campsite so they could walk to the surf.

The juniors really liked the Mike Ruinet contest and the grom contest.

The offer of the free hot chocolate at the Drift In was not popular as the kids had a hard time to get into the village. Nick says that the juniors want more contests and maybe it would be good to call contests in an impromptu way when the surf reports looked good.

We could run these events as a league table and then trophies given out at the end of the year.

(Spencer Hargreaves wants the best groms in the country to compete in getting into European contests on a wild card)

Tony Chennel gave the treasure report:

Approximately £1200 into our account and £1022 was spent.

We have £644.00 in the bank.

The West Sussex Council in all their wisdom are trying to block off some of local beach's for "swim-only areas". That means no Kitesurfing, no Windsurfing and no Surfing. Get online now, on the link and express your feelings.

We need you all to help protect the Wittering and Bracklesham beaches by filling in this survey.

We need to get on this guys its important for all us as well as the local businesses.

British Longboard Club Championships...

Well done to team shore- Joe, Lucy, Will, Craig, Mark, Adrian and graham for judging. It was a good weekend and some great surfing.

This year we have managed 6th place out of 12.

Good effort !

South Coast surfing championships....

Well done to all those who attended the south coast on the isle of wight a couple of weeks ago.

Shore had 5 of the 8 competitors in the finals, Lucy Howell won the junior girls.

Adrian Howell 2nd, Pete Symms 3rd and Nicolai 4th place in the longboard.

Big well done to Ed , first competitor in the water at 7-30 in the morning and making it out back in big surf!

Also well done to Pat, Nick and Shane who also were there supporting the club.

There's this new surf documenty out called soul surfer it's about a girl who suffered a shark attack when she was surfing and it's about re- building her life after the attack and going on to being a very successful surfer. It's on at Portsmouth (gunwalf quays) vue cinema at 5.30 everyday next week. I thought it would be great to get everyone in the club together to go, as last years trip to the cinema was so successful.  Lucy

Witterings Charity Paddle Event 2011 Results

Sunday 24th July saw 56 entrants to the Wittering Charity Paddle Event (organized by the Shore Surf Club & 2xs/Xtrain).
Entrants had to paddle against 20 knots of wind from East To West Wittering. The course is just over a mile from East To West Wittering which would normally take (on average) around 20 to 45 mins. However, the windy conditions made it much harder and it took the last competitor just under 2 hours to compete (the fastest time was 24 minutes 39). Even though the conditions were hard, nearly everyone fought on through and there were smiling, happy faces all over the beach at the finish line.

We want to thank everybody who participated in the paddle event and helped to raise money for "Snowdrop".

BUT a very big thank you to those who raised the most :
Shore Pub, Lucy Howell and Matt Rowe.

Here is an account of the day:

"What a fantastic event! It wasn’t looking too hopeful at the start – as the paddlers gathered at the end of Shore Road, the wind was gusting 20 knots Westerly and it was choppy. Those of us who had paddled down from the West as a warm up knew that going the other way, heading into the wind, was going to be really tough, and there was some discussion amongst the organisers as to whether the event would run. But the wind eased a tiny bit over the waiting period, and we were off.

It was amazing to see so many water disciplines together, each having their own battles within their group. For me, as a SUP surfer, it was also great to see the expansion in number of SUPs over the last year, and a couple of the UK’s top SUP racers turned up like Charlie Grey (sponsored rider, one of the UK’s top racers, 1st in Amateur Sprint Jever World Cup, Hamburg, 2010). And then of course there was Matt Argyle & Simon Basset of 2xs/X-Train, who had blitzed the SUP division last year. So it looked like the battle was on for the Shore Club amateur SUPers.In other divisions too, there was a mix of semi-pro or dedicated amateur and the purely recreational, all taking part on equal footing.

This is one of the many ways in which this event is so special.

The actual race was TOUGH! I was wearing a GPS monitor and it showed, in the chop and into the strong headwind, that I was averaging about half the speed you would expect with flat windless conditions. There were minor spills and incidents all along the way (btw sorry to the prone paddler who wiped out in front of me, and I struck with my paddle whilst trying to avoid him – he was a real gent about it). But there was huge camaraderie too. I remember Adriano taking the time amongst all the race mayhem to cheer people on (including me), even whiledoing very well himself in his division. And there was the kindness of a kayaker towards the end taking the time to point out the race finish buoy to the SUPers. The spectators at the finish line really made it too, patiently waiting, and cheering encouragingly as the often beaten and bedraggled paddlers made it to shore.

For those of us who paddle often and are experienced, and were doing it in crafts that are designed to travel distances this year’s race was quite enough of a challenge. So it is mind-boggling to me that so many from these disciplines who don’t paddle often, or were paddling e.g. surfboards managed to put in very respectable times under the circumstances.Amazing perseverance from Roger Wilson to finish the race, well done Roger! But the story of this year is all about the Ladies Surf Prones, Mary & Mimi Roterman, beating the men surf prone ! Also well done to Graham for a solid result on he's Velzy Prone Paddleboard!

Fortunately, the water safety crew were excellent, and kept a very watchful eye on us all.

A further memory of the day was the huge range of ages who took part. The youngsters had an experience they will never forget, and some of the oldest were, err...how shall I put it?...well, the phrase “carbon dating” comes to mind… Yet in many (indeed, perhaps most) cases, the more experienced showed many of their juniors how it should be done.

The day ended with an excellent BBQ on the beach, and Graham, Adriano and Simon’s entertaining awards presentation: not only did the top three in each category get a medal, there were also goodies and t-shirts galore, and then there was a chance to swap war stories. Then some of the “more experienced” Shore Club members retired to the Shore Pub to, ahem, replace the expended calories. A great event, for a worthy cause, and we are already looking forward to next year." Dr Paul Burgess (SUP'er & Shore surf club member)

Once again the annual paddle Event from East to West Wittering is taking place on Sunday 24th July 2011.

The event has become more and more popular each year and is loads of fun as well as a good chance to raise money for a good cause - The Sussex Snowdrop Trust.

The Paddle starts from Shore Road, East Wittering and heads west along the low-tide shallow waters to West Wittering where the event finishes just outside West Wittering Windsurf Club.

There are separate divisions for SUP, K§ayak and Prone surfboards and will be prizes for the winners in each division and age category.

The entry fee for all divisions and categories is £10 and this includes a barbecue provided at the end at West Wittering Windsurf Club.

Does your region boast the best surfing athletes in Europe? If you think so, why
not send a team to the Atlantic Watersports Games 2011, which is being hosted in
North Devon! The Surfing competition will take place at Downend in Croyde.

The Atlantic Watersports Games is an annual under 21 sporting championship event,
which gathers together the best regional teams in sailing, rowing, surfing and other
water sports in the Atlantic area. The Games attract over 400 young competitors
including World, European and National champions and can draw a wide audience.

Surf Fun Day in conjuction with "Groms surf series contest"

Surf Fun Day has been moved one week to become part of the
"Groms Surf Series contest"to be held at Shore Rd on the Saturday 28th of May.
Wittering surf shop is next in line to hold this groms contest which is run with Sorted Surf shop / Boscombe boardriders surf club, in Bournemouth and Ocean Sports in Brighton.
The Shore Surf Club has been invited to get involved and take the event to a whole new level!
The club will be incorporating FUN activities for all the family including Paddleboarding demos,Indo Boarding ,Volleyball games and of course a BBQ.

“ THE WITTERING BEACH CLEAN UP “

Meet up at Shore Rd 10am

Saturday 16^th April is the day for all of us to get together at East Wittering Beach and clean up as much trash as possible.
We, as surfers and all beach users , should set the example to keep our beaches clean and prepared for summer use.
There will be free tea and coffee given out from the “Drift- in Surf Cafe Mobile Unit”.

Last year the council loaned us the pick-up tongs and provided bags for the rubbish,

this is something we plan to repeat this year.

Maybe those of you who are creative, can be on the lookout for driftwood too?

Children are welcome to come too as keeping our beach clean is something they should understand .

Trash is easy to throw down but hard to pick up.

Club AGM at the Shore Pub.

We all met at 10am for the annual pre-AGM breakfast paid for by the Club.
The full breakfast was followed by the start of the AGM meeting at 11:20 by Adriano, ‘el presidente’.
Over to Shag for a summary on club members figures (76members) and BSA status.
The BSA has gone into administration and the new surfing government body is now called “Surfing GB”. Here is their web site http://surfinggb.com.
We will use their insurance for our club.
Adriano announces Shag’s decision to leave the club as secretary and we all thank him for the good job over the last two years. Applause.
Over to Graham for a roundup of the years’ contests.
We had two Mike Ruinet’s contests. One in March for the 2009
and in November for the 2010 including a new short board category won by Will.
Both events where held in good conditions (For full results visit our blog entries)
Then we came second once again on this year’s Interclub held in Saunton thanks to the new faces like Nick Cheshire,Craig Chennel ,Shano and Matt Reed.
Graham announces he would like to leave the committee and we all thanked him for the great job he done over the past two years. Applause.
Over to Tony (in place of Laurie) for the statement of the accounts.
All is in order with the club accounts. We are in the black with a figure of £645.
Back to Adriano ,el Presidente for the final word.
All is gone well with 2010 contest and events, He thanked his team for the good job during the year and hoping for the continuation of FUN surfing events and comps for 2011 with emphasis for the Club to reach out to the new young surfers coming to the area.
Finally Adriano’s declared to end the "dictatorship" by not running for Presidente a third term and therefore proceeded to nominate the new candidates suggested.
(unless anyone else wanted to come forward for the new posts)

On Saturday 4th of December we had our Christmas Club Night,
We enjoyed talking about the good surf of the morning (Sparky's lefts..big deal..), we learned swimming technics from Graham,we talked about the new Yoga class on Wednesdays, we discussed surf trips for the new year to Sri Lanka, Maldives, Morroco and the usual Costa Rica.
We ended up at Will's place for a surf movie and one more beer..
(Paul was very enthusiastic about the short-boarding..)

We announced the final results for the Mike Ruinet's Nov. 2010.
The Presentation was a big success with the new medals and trophies!

2010 "Snowdrop Charity" Paddle Event

The annual Witterings Charity Paddle event and race went ahead on Sunday 22nd August in aid of the Sussex Snowdrop trust. The annual event organised by The Shore Surf Club and X-train had 28 competitors who paddled on surf boards, SUPs, Kayaks, prone surf boards and outrigger style kayaks. The fun event has been going for 5 years and locals from the Shore Surf Club and West Wittering Windsurf Club compete with others for medals and fun over the 1/2 mile between East and West Wittering beach.

The poor August weather didn't put off the competitors who raced up the shore line at low tide. The starts were staggered - kayaks went first followed by prone surfboards, surfboards and finally SUPs. The whole idea of the event is fun: to bring the community together between East and West Wittering and raise some money for charity.

Plenty of families were at the event, children under 10 taking part as well as the oldest competitor at nearly 70 who made the distance. The local CDC patrol service, PUMA safety were on hand for safety backup along with a jet ski from WWWC and lifeguards from West Wittering Beach.

Keith Rathbone won the overall event on his 18ft outrigger, Simon Bassett was 1st SUPer, James Randall (liveguard) 1st prone paddler, Nicolai Roterman 1st surfer,Mary Roterman 1st Ladies surfer, Holly Bassett 1st lady SUP and first junior SUP, James Anrell Smith first junior surfer and the Crawford brothers 1st junior kayak. Chris Mclaron, who raised nearly £360 as well as Roger Wilson for being the most enthusiastic and oldest competitor!

Organisers Adriano Roldan, Graham Taplin and Simon Bassett were all very happy with the result - not only was the event good fun but also we raised £1150 for the Sussex Snowdrop trust.
Big Thanks to IndoEurope for the Medals and for the raffled Indo Board!

Shore A team placed 2nd in the 2010 British Longboard Club Championships
only 4 points off the winning team!!

Due to flat conditions,the morning started with a paddle race. Graham and Jase did their best representing the club and winning 9th place

Then, with the incoming tide, the surf contest started with "ankle-snappers" sets. Our Boys negotiated the ripples fantastically, with the skills of Nick's fancy footwork, Matt's flawless switch footing, Will's carvings, Pete's hangs fives, Shano's power and Dogboys signature head stand!

Our B team came last due to lack of team members with just Paul's electric charge and then Graham consistently hammering down the line. We also proud of you too!

Then club night at the shore we welcomed Ian back from Australia..Finally,our own members the SUP boys arrived from the "the outside banks" to claim a pint or two! All good FUN.

2010 MIKE RUINET MEMORIAL OPEN CLUB COMPETITION

The Mike Ruinet Memorial Classic was held at Shore Road in what was unprecedented and very clean surf. The forecast on the Magicweed gave us a hint of surf, but what we saw at 9 in the morning was perfect, 6 foot "Wittering" sets coming in one after another.

We had a good turn out with 16 entries.

The Open event, of two heats, was a true contest with plenty of opportunities for the contestants to show their skill. We had both longboard and shortboard entries together for a mixed show of skillful maneuvers.

The Masters was one heat of four contestants in what was still good surf but dropping fast with wind. Before the swell completely died, we sent in the Veterans for the last show of "fancy footwork"...Good fun was had by all watching the action.

Huge thanks to Del (Mike's mother) who brought a huge box of biscuits which was the perfect pick up in between heats. Also Thanks to Tony Chennel for taking great Pictures,

We done it!

We have broken all past club records..

We came 2nd place at Saunton & brought back the Trophies!!

The Contest was held over this past Saturday 26 in clean 2 ft Saunton waves and sunshine.
In total where 24 heats of 15 minutes ,best 2 waves.. 5 entries per heat.
The club had 4 x first places,3 x second places,3 x third places, 1 x forth place and 3 x fifth places.

coming out which may be of interest to you for your website and to your members?
It's a surf documentary called 'Bustin' Down the Door' which chronicles the lives of
World Champions Wayne "Rabbit" Bartholomew, Shaun Tomson and Mark Richards. The film
covers events from the 70's and documents how these men risked everything to become
the best surfers in the world and inevitably changed the world of surfing forever.

The film will be a limited release but we'll be touring it across the UK from the

57 competitors turned up to the Annual Charity Paddlerace on Saturday 15th August – the race was held between Shore Road, East Wittering and West Wittering Beach.

We had entries from Kayakers, surfers, paddlesurfers and prone paddleboarders. The weather conditions on the day made it much harder, with a 20knot southwesterly wind, two foot chop and overcast skies; but this didn’t deter the competitors.

At the start of the event the competitors held a minutes silence, for local waterman, Colin McCulloch, who had lost his fight with cancer at the age of 36 a week before the event.

This year was in aid of St Wilfrid’s Hospice and each competitor had to raise money for the charity – although the event wasn’t a race as such, it always ends up that way and a local guy, Keith Rathbone, stormed the day on his surf kayak.

First prone surfer, was West Wittering Estate lifeguard, James Randall; first paddlesurfer – Paul Metcalfe from East Wittering; first surfer was local shaper, Pete Sims; first lady surfer – Mary Roterman; first Junior Surfer – George Low.

There was plenty of youngsters who took part in the event in both kayaks and surfboards, the youngest being Daisy Bassett, aged 6, accompanied by Mum in a double kayak.

When everyone had finished on the beach at West Wittering there was a BBQ and prize giving.

Thanks must be given to all the helpers which include Clive, Adriano, Shag, Graham and Sharon from Shore Surf Club; Chris Rainbow from X-Train; Dave and Martin from Puma Safety at Bracklesham; the lifeguards at West Wittering Estate who provided safety cover.

We should also thank the sponsors – 2XS, X-train, Shore Surf Club, Wittering Surf Shop, Indoboard, The Beach House, West Wittering Estate, Tawny Nurseries & Crouchers.

Event Organiser, Simon Bassett and the Chairman of the Shore Surf Club, Adriano Roldan said “we are really pleased that we have raised £2685.90 for St Wilfrid’s Hospice and we look forward to 2010’s event. Part of the reason that we are involved in running this event is to make people aware of the healthy benefits of getting in the water. Its great fun, it keeps you fit and there is a good lifestyle.”

Charity Summer Paddle

On the Saturday 15th of August,X-train, in conjunction with the Shore Surf Club are running a charity paddle

The paddle starts at 2pm from the end of Shore Road, East Wittering and then follows the beach to West Wittering Windsurf Club.

Participants may use surfboards, paddle-boards or kayaks and the paddle should take between 20 and 40 minutes. There will be prizes for the winners in each category .Safety craft will be provided by West Wittering Windsurf Club. Under 16s must be accompanied by a parent/guardian. The event will run in shallow, low-tide conditions.

BBQ and drinks available on the day..

Entry Fee Adults £5 , Junior members FREE.

"40th Anniversary round up"

Thank you to all who came to the 40th Anniversary of the Shore Surf Club.

For those who missed the big celebration we are posting lots of pictures and comments.

A big thanks to our photographers of the day - James Saunders, Brian Spicer, Chris Holt and all others who captured the events of the day.

A 'special' thanks to our own club member - our own 'surfing chef' Nick and his family for providing an excellent variety of BBQ food to sustain us through the day.

The fish was provided by another club member, 'Bob the Fisherman".

Water activities included surfing. One wave was caught by the 'hippie Mary' in non-surfable conditions. Paddle demo's star attraction was Tony's own hand built wooden paddleboard and Grahams new Velzy (surftech) yellow paddleboard.

Stand Up Paddling was demonstrated by Guy and Laurie Fletcher, Lucy Howell, Chris, Ken and

even Roger Mansfield was coached by "el presidente". Thanks to Shorewatersports for lending club members equipment for the day.

Beach vollyball was fun too with an impressive game between 'el president's" team vs event manager's team. Who won? you may ask....'el presidente's, of course.

Moving on to the Shore Pub night action - a slideshow of past Shore events was a warmup for the opening speech by Shag. Special guest for the evening was Roger Mansfield, one of the founders of surfing in England. He was signing copies his new book, The Surfing Tribe (£20 to club members), during the party. Brian James was presented with a life membership to the Shore Surf Club. Brian's long history of surfing in Wittering is well documented and something we are all proud of - thank you Brian for keeping the 'flame of surfing' alive all those years! Many old members of the club were at the party and we got a group photo which really made the whole evening special.

Live music was provided by Max and Guy Fletcher - they sang everything from Bob Dylan to the Eagles, Surf City by Jan and Dean, to Johnny Cash to some original songs by Guy.

We are very fortunate they are in our Club!

Raffle prizes were donated by O'neil, Hardcloud, Boardshop, Reef and Indoboard.

Snacks at the Shore Pub were demolished as they were terrific!

And special thanks to our event manager Graham who made it all happen!

What a DAY! Rumors has it...this could become an yearly event here or elsewhere...?

Beach Clean up 2009

Beach clean up back in March was well attended with plenty debris cleared for the spring season.
Mostly fishing net , cigarette lighters, plastic bags,though we did find a few beer bottles which were sadly empty,Doh!!
On a serious note...the Club is proud to protect our environment...

"SAS Campaigner Andy Cummins says: "Marine litter is a problem that faces all beach users and marine wildlife. It's a huge problem, but, it's one we can all do something about."
so well done everyone and keep cleaning everytime you go to the beach,every little helps...

Welcome to the new look site, we have moved it all around a bit so we can do more and make it easier for everyone to use. However, we need content for the site (as ever) so in return for us putting news, events, and maybe even some offers from people, we need you to keep sending us photos and stories!
